A Legendary Afternoon at Weevil Gear & Beer
On July 26th, during Widespread Panic’s three-night run in Asheville, we were honored to host Sunny Ortiz—longtime percussionist for Panic—for an unforgettable drum workshop in our back beer garden. From 1–3 PM, Sunny generously donated his time to share his passion, knowledge, and contagious energy with our community.
Learning the Language of Drums
Participants of all ages gathered close, hand drums and congas in tow, to soak up Sunny’s wisdom. He dove into the history of percussion, shared playing techniques, and guided the group through vibrant jam sessions. The air buzzed with rhythm, laughter, and smiles as Sunny not only taught but also inspired. Afterward, he stuck around to answer questions, sign drums, and take photos—leaving everyone feeling welcomed and celebrated.
A Gathering with Purpose
This workshop wasn’t just about music—it was about giving back. Attendees were encouraged to bring both a drum and a canned food donation, benefiting the Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County. On top of that, the Coalition organized a lively raffle, stocked with prizes donated by breweries, industry friends, and Weevil Outdoor. The highlight? A Widespread Panic poster signed by the entire band from their Asheville shows.
Impact Worth Celebrating
Between raffle ticket sales and donations, the event raised an incredible $2,000 for the Hunger Coalition—all while creating memories that will stick with our community for years to come. It was proof of what happens when music, compassion, and good people come together in the spirit of giving.
The Vibe We Live For
The afternoon perfectly captured the essence of Weevil Gear & Beer: a place where adventures are celebrated, people gather, and community thrives. With drums echoing through the beer garden, smiles all around, and support flowing toward a meaningful cause, the day reminded us that good vibes only get better when shared.
